Silvervest – Zombik & Caloia

Silvervest is the duo project of Nic Caloia and Kim Zombik. They remain wide open to fresh and new sonic possibilities. Their original and intimate songs relate bittersweet stories of cosmic encounters that undulate between swagger and sweetness. Imagine Sun Ra as Joni Mitchell’s pianist or if Laurie Anderson wrote songs for Billie Holiday, and you will have some idea of the amusing and amazing music created by this longstanding duo.

Imagine Sun Ra as Joni Mitchell’s pianist or if Laurie Anderson wrote songs for Billie Holiday. That potent and eclectic poise is what the duo, Silvervest, offers. Silvervest is the duo project of Nicolas Caloia (double bass) and Kim Zombik (voice) that cruxes intimacy at the heart of their compositions. Playing in the field of storytelling, pop, soundscapes, jazz and jangling, Silvervest offers fresh music that is intuitive and potent. Their goal is music that is both improvised and composed, pop and avant-garde. Silvervest’s vibrant melodic music toggles between swagger and sweetness, caressing and careening, and remains unset and generous. The duo, ever open to possibilities, explores the nuts and bolts of humanity’s mortal coil with tenderness, humour and tunefulness.

Kim Zombik roots her original compositions and performance style deep in her own rich life experience. She performs regularly in Montreal and has released 12 recordings, 3 on Sony/Village Records. Two of those releases reached top ten in Japan’s SWING Journal. Kim has opened for funk legend Parliament Funkadelic, Maceo Parker, Jimmy Cliff, The Wailers and sung with Olu Dara and William Parker. With her own quartet, Kim has performed in the Montreal International Jazz Festival (2005, 2009, 2014), the L’OFF Jazz Festival (2014), the Ginza, Japan, Jazz Festival (2007), the Irktusk, Siberia “New York Blues” Festival (2008), as well as toured with a 90-piece orchestra in Japan (2009 with Joe Hisaichi and the Japan New World Orchestra).

Nicolas Caloia is a Montreal based bassist, composer, and bandleader. He works at creating a living music by using rigorously composed material to channel collective improvisation. He can be heard in ongoing collaborations with Tristan Honsinger, Joe McPhee, Matana Roberts, Malcolm Goldstein, Kim Zombik, Lori Freedman, Rainer Wiens, and Yves Charuest or in past projects with Roscoe Mitchell, Marshall Allen, Steve Lacy, Hassan Hakmoun, William Parker, and Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. Nicolas has composed for and led many ensembles including 20 piece, Juno and GAMIQ nominated Ratchet Orchestra. He has fulfilled composition commissions from the Quatuor Bozzini, Tour de Bras, Productions Super Musique, FIMAV, Radio Canada, and CKUT 90.3 fm.
