Alexandra Nilsson / FOSSIL
FOSSIL aims to create a deeper and broadened relation to stone, as a being worth respecting and venerating, and through sound opening up a space to connect to the stone in a sonic dimension.
FOSSIL is a project based on stone, where sound artist and composer Alexandra Nilsson researches the material both acoustically, performatively and sculpturally. She primarily works with limestone and sandstone from the small island Öland, (located in the Baltic sea, south of Sweden) but also diabase (black granite) and slate. During the years, she has developed her own playing techniques, seeking sounds that transcend the material itself, often with references to electronic and other abstract sounds. Her performances are delicate, intense and powerful, creating textures with the subtlest acoustic sounds, and heavy, noisy drones with analogue loops. Within FOSSIL she creates acoustic and electroacoustic works and performances, as well as installations that examine stone in ecological, geological, and cultural contexts.
Alexandra Nilsson is a composer, sound artist and performer based in Stockholm, Sweden. Her work stretches across acoustic and electroacoustic music, sound art, noise and performative practices. Lyrical as well as brutal, minimalist and maximalist, her art moves through the delicate and subtle expressions to the raw and forceful. She is interested in the borderline between acoustic and electronic sound worlds and researches materials acoustically, performatively, and contextually. She frequently works interdisciplinary with dancers, performers, and visual artists and her collaborations include; performative noise duo Sisterloops, audiovisual duo Shapes of Sounds and electroacoustic duo with trumpeter and improviser Susana Santos Silva, with whom she released an album on the Italian label SUPERPANG.
Nilsson´s works have been presented in concert halls, contemporary music and noise festivals and museums, including the Stockholm Concert Hall, Nordic Music Days, Sound of Stockholm, Norberg Festival, Ausland, dESTRUKTIVA, Audioblast and the Museum of Öland.
